Therapeutic Horsemanship
Volunteering
at Equest
Wylie, Texas
I'm extremely blessed to be able to participate in a very
unique volunteer job, which promotes loving, caring relationships between
physically, mentally and emotionally challenged children and a group of very
special horses, many of them older and retired, who provide invaluable physical
therapy in a most unusual form.
In
return for giving the gift of their own muscular movements to exercise and
strengthen the bodies and minds of the children, who come to Equest with a
variety of challenges including severe muscular dystrophy, Down Syndrome and
ADHD among many others, these wonderful horses live in a serene setting where
they receive quality health care, daily exercise to help keep them fit and
active, and a wealth of loving attention from children, professional staff and
volunteers.
At Equest, we see miracles happen every day as wheelchairs are
left behind and riders bond with and become as one with their mounts. To
see photos, read the individual stories of each of the Equest horses and find
out how you can volunteer at the riding center in Wylie or, perhaps, at a
therapeutic horsemanship facility near you, please visit Equest's website at
